A study on the bronze inscriptions of the Shang dynasty

ABSTRACT:

The bronze inscriptions of the Shang dynasty that engraved on the ritual vessels was the formal written language, it is an integral part of the Shang dynasty bronze ritual vessels, so, it is the important historical information to study the bronzes, the writing, the ritual system and the political system, social structure of the Shang dynasty that be reflected.

This paper had collected the Shang dynasty bronze that engraved with inscription, had reviewed over the research roads of the Shang dynasty bronze inscription. And use archaeological methods to division the periods of the engraved bronzes, with the archaeological typology to analysis over 2,000 pieces of bronze such as the eat devices, wine, watercraft, musical instruments, weapons and miscellaneous vehicles. Reference with the archaeological unearthed bronzes that had clear age, the paper had discussed the age and period of these bronzes, and basically established the age framework of Shang dynasty bronze with engraved inscription. The paper emphasized on the bronze with engraved inscription before the monarch WUDING, and had added some new discovered bronzes of this period, at the same time, the paper had discussed some opinion that concerned with this subject. On this basis, the paper had analyses the characters modality of the bronzes inscription of the Shang dynasty, summed up the characteristic of the inscription due to the different period. In addition, the paper had analysis the grammar of the bronzes inscription of the Shang dynasty, and contrasted with the grammar of the oracle, the paper discussed the similarities and difference of the word, phrase and sentence between this two most important writing in the Shang dynasty. About the officeholder of the Shang dynasty that reflected in the bronzes inscription, the paper at first emphasized on the issue of the YA() that was discussed many years. After that, the paper had analysis the character and function of some other officeholder, and tried to analysis the bureaucracy system of the Shang dynasty. The paper also had ingathered the material of the ZI(son) and the FU(woman) in the bronzes inscription of Shang dynasty, and took believe that some ZI had brotherhood as well as some name of the FU had embodiment the marital relationship between the different clans. The names of the clan that had considerable influence to the study of the history of the Shang dynasty are the most important content in the bronzes inscription of the Shang dynasty. In this part, the paper had reviewed the research history of the clan, and analysis the composite clan that had disturbed academia. After that, the paper had discussed some clans according to the orientation along with the oracle material, and on this base, the paper tried to reconstruct the fabric of the geography and polity of the Shang dynasty. There appeared the long adversaria in the last stage of the Shang dynasty, the paper considered the largess were the core of the long inscription of the adversaria, and tried to analysis the relationship of the people and possession contrasted with the oracle and the bronzes inscription of Westen Zhou dynasty. At the last part, the paper put foreword some issuer that need to follow up in the future.
